The Beyond Automation: Creative AI for Musicians workshop is designed to give musicians, producers, and sound artists both a conceptual and practical understanding of creative AI in music. Over two workshop days, participants will explore open-source tools, gain insight into different families of deep learning models for music, learn the fundamentals of training and fine-tuning their own models, and reflect critically on the creative, ethical, and aesthetic implications of AI in composition.
The workshop strikes a balance between theory and practice, alternating between short lectures and guided hands-on sessions. Participants will work with curated open-source tools (including Ableton Live with Max for Live devices, Colab notebooks, and real-time audio models such as RAVE and DDSP), and will be introduced to dataset preparation, model training pipelines, and control strategies for different architectures (VAE, GAN, Diffusion, Transformer/LLM).
By the end of the workshop, participants will have:
-A clear overview of opportunities and limitations of current AI models for music.
-The skills to use, adapt, or fine-tune pre-trained models from sources like Hugging Face.
-A practical understanding of dataset preparation and lightweight training pipelines.
-Experience integrating AI-generated material into their DAW workflow.
-A completed short composition or musical sketch using AI tools explored during the sessions.
Ninon Devis Salvy is a researcher in creative AI at Native Instruments and PhD graduate from IRCAM. Formerly a teacher in electronic music composition at IRCAM, Ninon continues to explore the intersection of sound, code, and artistic expression.
