Media Archaeology of Graphic Sound Synthesis - nuPG & nUPIC
Marcin Pietruszewski
Saturday 14.02.2026, 13:00 - 19:00 (with breaks)
Sunday 15.02.2026, 10:00 - 16:00 (with breaks)
The New Pulsar Generator (nuPG) is a contemporary SuperCollider implementation extending Curtis Roads's pioneering 2001 pulsar synthesis system, reopening a historical pathway between granular microsound and traditional waveform synthesis through dynamic control of pulsetrains and their temporal envelopes. nUPIC is a SuperCollider reimagining of Iannis Xenakis's landmark UPIC system (1977), where drawn gestures translate directly into sonic morphology through graphic waveform and envelope design.
The workshop approaches both tools through the lens of media archaeology, examining how historical synthesis paradigms can be excavated, reactivated and extended through contemporary implementation. Participants will explore the conceptual, aesthetic and technological dimensions of graphic approaches to sound synthesis—investigating how these programs open alternative temporalities and timbral territories that mainstream software development has left unexplored.
Participants will receive:
Marcin Pietruszewski is a composer and researcher working at the intersection of sound synthesis, computational listening, and psychoacoustics. He develops digital audio tools and creates spatial sound installations, collaborating with international festivals and institutions including ZKM, CTM Festival, and Sonic Acts.
